Who would have thought that I would end up a cheerleader—especially in college??? During my senior year of high school and after moving twice during those four years, I wanted to go to college and find my place and my “thing.” I could do a toe touch and the splits, and I had never been thrown in the air only to be caught by my feet! But still, I thought I might as well give it a try and see what happens. I thought, “Even if I don’t make the team, it’ll be fun to try something new.”

So I did, and boy, am I glad I did.

My awesome coach took a chance on me, and before I knew it, I was trusting guys I had just met to launch my body in the air, and I was thoroughly terrified. Now that I think of it, I think Dad was terrified too! Over time, I became much less terrified—until my first cheer camp when I was put in a group to be thrown in a basket, and I cried! (We laugh about that now! 😉 )
But here I am, wrapping up my junior year, and I can’t imagine my college experience without cheer as a part of it. Here are three important things I have learned through my experience cheering on the Bobcats:
Wherever you go, find your people.
Wherever you go, find a community who strives to exemplify Christ and is rooting for you in life. A team changes every year, but the joyful spirit of that team can live on season after season. Find your team who truly wants the best for you and whom you can pour out encouragement and Christ’s love to as well.

Encouragement is so meaningful.
I have always thought of myself as an independent person who is motivated and self-disciplined enough to achieve anything I put my mind to. But since being a part of a team like this one, I have realized how much the encouragement of those I care about has a way of putting me at ease and has even compelled me to push through times of my college experience that I didn’t think I could get through (like a certain class that had me in a constant frenzy last semester!!!!). Outside of my family, I have learned the value of a support system and been able to be that support for others. From the “checking in on you” texts to hours-long study sessions at Starbucks together, the encouragement and support of those I love have gotten me through my most challenging times of college.

Laugh a little more—or a LOT more!
I have learned to let go of some of my perfectionist tendencies (keyword: some) and not take life too seriously since being on the funniest team around—trust me on this one. Even through the most frustrating times, we have found ways to let loose and laugh together. When I start stressing over my many approaching deadlines, I find ways to take a step back and remember that there is more to life than homework and tests. I’ve learned to enjoy the small things and smile through the big things. 🙂

Bonus lesson: Try something new even if it terrifies you!!!
Until next time,
Annie Lark
